About Tavistock

Tavistock is a welcoming community where you can enjoy long walks, explore beautiful community parks and forge friendships that will last a lifetime. It’s famous for its cheese and fresh meats and plays host to a number of excellent annual events including a Sauerkraut Supper, the World Crokinole Championship, and the Southwestern Ontario Open Fiddle and Stepdance Competition. A true Canadian hockey town, Tavistock is home to the Tavistock Braves, a junior hockey team that plays in the Southern Ontario Junior Hockey League, and the Tavistock Royals, a senior hockey team that plays in the Western Ontario Athletic Association Senior Hockey League.

When you call Tavistock home, you can enjoy the best of the city and the country. It’s ideally located just 35 Kilometers west of Kitchener/Waterloo (a 30 minute drive) off Hwy 7, and 15 Kilometers southeast of Stratford (a 15-20 minute drive). If you work in Ontario’s Tech Triangle, it’s a great town to call home as you can easily commute to work in under an hour. If you’re passionate for fine dining, theater and music, hop in the car to enjoy world-class performances in Stratford.

Tavistock’s history

Tavistock is a German/Scottish community that was founded in 1848 by Capt. Henry Eckstein on the boundary between Oxford and Perth Counties. It served as a gathering place for agricultural workers and soon became equipped with taverns, flour mills, blacksmith shops, general stores and small tradesmen.
